I’ve discovered my new favorite way to explore a city - Photo scavenger hunts! I recently spent an afternoon getting to know Birmingham, AL by means of a scavenger adventure. Sarah and I came up with our own rules and completed the hunt with just the two of us, but I am sure it would be just as much fun alone or with a large group.
Here is a list of the items we came up with:
Leaf
Shadows
Reflection
Portrait
Low Key photograph
High key photograph
Bird’s eye view
Bug’s eye view (I may have made this term up)
Action shot
Door
Mailbox
Picture with all grey tones
Picture with all purple tones (choose any color)
Stairs
Wall or fence
Bird
Tree
Closeup
Old Signage
There’s no limit to what you can pick. Challenge yourselves to not only find the items, but to photograph them in a unique way. We waited to share our images with one another until the end of the hunt, which really highlighted how differently we had both interpreted the same places.
If you are in a new city, this would be a great way to get out and make an adventure of your day. If you want to try this in the city you live in, note how it makes you look at places with a completely new perspective. You can also use your knowledge of the city to get really interesting shots.
I ran out of time to get all of the items on the list. But, I have posted some of my favorites here. What I found to be most interesting was how different the images are from my usual style. As a professional photographer, I sometimes forget to make time to go out and practice my craft for fun. It was very exciting and liberating to go out and take pictures purely for the joy of it. Go forth, adventure and share your images with me on social media. I’d love to see what you come up with!
All of the images were taken on my iPhone 7 Plus and edited using VSCO.
